Crosby, Stills and Nash, Los Angeles, CA, 1969 by Henry Diltz
(First Album cover)
Blender Gallery is very excited to be hosting this exhibition during the time of the Crosby, Stills & Nash Australian Tour. This intimate and iconic collection is made extra special by the role of the two photographers - Henry Diltz as the role of a music photographer and dear friend, and Graham Nash as a member of the band offering a unique inside view.
Many of these special photographs have not been available for public viewing or purchasing in Australia until now.
Crosby, Stills and Nash, 1970 by Henry DiltzGraham Nash, famed for his music as a member of one of the UK's most successful 60s bands, The Hollies, and founder of US super group Crosby, Stills and Nash (later joined by Neil Young), is a talented photographer, collector, and digital imaging pioneer.
GrahamNash, NYC by Graham NashNash's photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Most recently, Nash curated the book, "Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock 'n' Roll Photographs." In 2006, fifty years of Graham Nash's photographic images were shown in his first solo museum exhibition, Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash, at San Diego's Museum of Photographic Arts. MoPA Director Arthur Ollman commented, "Nash is the real thing...his vision is quite his own...if you look at his songwriting over the years, a lot of his imagery is visual. I can't help but think it's very influenced by his photographic way of seeing things." The show, featuring images including ones of family, famous friends, unknown subjects and abstract compositions, expanded on Nash's 2004 book of the same name, a limited edition volume published by Steidl.
Joni Mitchell, 1969 by Graham Nash"Joni listening to music"
In the world of rock n' roll photographers, there are none as extraordinary as Henry Diltz. A founding member of the Modern Folk Quartet, Diltz is as much at home as a musician on tour, as he is a visual historian of the last four decades of popular music. The rapport he's developed with his musician friends, along with his down-to-earth-grin and frequent laugh, enables him to capture the candid shots that convey a rare feeling of trust and intimacy with his subjects.
For Diltz, the pictures began with a $20 second-hand Japanese camera purchased on tour with the Modern Folk Quartet. When MFQ disbanded, he embarked on his photographic career with an album cover for The Lovin' Spoonful. Despite his lack of formal training, Diltz easily submerged himself in the world of music: the road, the gigs, the humor, the social consciousness, the psychedelia, the up and down times.
Crosby Stills & Nash, Big Bear CA 1969 by Henry DiltzHis relationship with the members of Crosby, Stills & Nash dates back to the mid 1960s when he photographed the band members in their individual bands; Stephen Stills in Buffalo Springfield and David Crosby in The Byrds. Crosby, Stills & Nash were then founded in 1968 and Henry continued to document their progression, including their first album cover "Crosby, Stills and Nash" in 1969.
For over 40 years, his work has graced hundreds of album covers and has been featured in books, magazines and newspapers such as New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, People, Rolling Stone and Billboard. His photo of Tina Turner was the iconic image used to promote the Brooklyn Museum's groundbreaking exhibit, "Who Shot Rock and Roll" in 2009, and his photo of The Doors was used as the poster for the 2010 release of the movie, When You're Strange.
Joni Mitchell with Graham Nash, CA, 1969 by Henry DiltzThis exhibition offers a unique insight into one of the most acclaimed music groups of our time.
A rare and personal and personal documentation by two photographers who were both friends, musicians, and in a sense - like family.
"Crosby, Stills & Nash - A Photographic Collection by Graham Nash and Henry Diltz opens on March 29th and will run until April 21st 2012.
