FLETCHER GALLERY PRESENTS “LEGENDS AT LARGE” OPENING AUGUST 29, 2015

WOODSTOCK, NEW YORK (August 5, 2015) –Fletcher Gallery, located in the heart of Woodstock, New York, the oldest art colony in the United States, announced today that it will launch “Legends at Large ~ Four Points of View” opening on August 29th featuring the work of four extraordinary photographers.  Leading the exhibition is legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash and his Fine Art Photography. Co-exhibitors include photographers Elliott Landy, Joel Bernstein and new comer Amy Grantham.  The exhibit will launch and  run through October 14, 2015 with an opening reception on August 29th that runs from 5-8pm at the gallery.

 

"I am so thrilled to participate in this exhibition with Elliott Landy, Joel Bernstein and Amy Grantham,” Graham Nash said.  “The environment of the gallery not only evokes the spirit of Woodstock, but it is a great place to promote our work. I hope everyone gets a chance to see it.”

 

In addition to his prodigious talent for music, Graham Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer, collector, and digital imaging pioneer. Nash’s work is autobiographical and it is intimate in nature. And, as only Graham Nash could have photographed them, his work includes artfully crafted pictures of friends such as David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, and Johnny Cash who have been part of his long and influential career.

 

Inspired by his father, Nash began taking pictures at the age of 11. Prompted by his friend Joni Mitchell, with whom he once lived and who was the inspiration for his song Our House, Nash began to exhibit his photographs in 1990. Since then his work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world, including at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Eastman House, and the Butler Museum of American Art. His company Nash Editions’ original IRIS 3047 digital printer and one of its first published works—Nash’s 1969 portrait of David Crosby— is now housed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in recognition of his revolutionary accomplishments in the fine arts and digital printing world.

 

“An exploratory meeting between Nash and Landy at the gallery earlier this summer led to this very special exhibition,” Tom Fletcher, owner of Fletcher Gallery, said.  “When they met, it instantly flashed back to '69, when Elliot's camera documented The Woodstock Festival and a performance by Crosby, Stills and Nash spawned a revolution in three part harmony. The activism of those days is still very much alive in the contemporary work of all four photographers.” 

 

Elliott Landy is a Woodstock’s Icon.  He has lived in Woodstock since the mid-1960s.  He is an incredible photographer best known for his iconic photographs of rock musicians.  New York born and bred, he was the official photographer of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. His photographic work has graced the covers of such magazines as Rolling Stone, LIFE, and The Saturday Evening Post. Landy's portraits have also graced the covers of many of the best known albums of our times including Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, Van Morrison's Moondance, and The Band's second album, eponymously titled The Band. In 2008, Landy was the Larry Berk Artist-in-Residence at Ulster County Community College.

 

Graham Nash’s long-time friend, Oakland, California based, Joel Bernstein is a legendary rock photographer/archivist, musician and record producer.  As a photographer, Joel Bernstein’s work has appeared as the album covers to Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush, CSNY’s 4 Way Street along with covers for Bruce Springsteen, Crosby Nash’s Wind on the Water, Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty, CSN, Bob Dylan at Budokan, Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps, and Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light among many others.  He has been published in Time, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone. Retrospective exhibits of his work have been shown in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and London. 

 

Nash, Landy and Bernstein are  proud to debut the work of Amy Grantham. She is a New York City-based artist, film maker, and photographer.  Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, she began to explore herself through art.  She is a terrific Mixed Media Artist and Photographer. She also is the screenplay writer, and actor of her film about her own post-cancer life story “Lily” which premiered at Tribeca film festival in 2013 and went on to have its world-wide premier at the Deauville Film Festival.   


 

LEGENDS AT LARGE becomes a testament to pop stardom and what is required to survive it. All four artists will attend an opening reception on August 29th from 5 to 8 PM at the Fletcher Gallery at 40 Mill Hill Road.
